Office Romance (Служебный роман / Sluzhebnyj roman) is a 1977 Soviet rom-com directed by Eldar Ryazanov. It is based on the play, Co-workers (Сослуживцы / Sosluzhivtsy), written by Eldar Ryazanov and Emil Braginsky. It’s one of the Soviet Union’s most beloved comedies and one of director Ryazanov’s many popular movies, including The Irony of Fate and Beware of the Car!
The film tells the story of an unexpected workplace romance. Anatoli Yefremovich Novoseltsev works at a government statistics bureau in Moscow. The director of his division is a bossy woman named Ludmila Prokopievna Kalugina. When an old friend tries to get Anatoli a promotion, Ludmila objects.
Following that, Anatoli’s friend suggests that Anatoli flirt with Ludmila to help with the promotion. However, Anatoli and Ludmila, soon end up falling in love with each other – an office romance which surprises everyone.
